Going Through the Motions

Life has been busy around here. Puppies, church, grandchildren’s archery tourney, writing, and normal life have kept me hurrying through prayer and Bible reading. I’ve been praying, but at times it’s felt like I was only going through the motions.

In my normal routine, while I’m spraying my hair, I clear the counter and wipe the sink. Multitasking to straighten the counter while spraying my hair. A year or so ago, I was disappointed that my hairspray wasn’t holding my hair like it normally did. I would reapply, and it still wasn’t working. One morning, while doing my usual multitasking and spraying, I glanced up in the mirror to see that the hairspray was shooting straight into the air, not hitting my hair. The tip was clogged! I’d been going through the motions but not accomplishing my task.

It has me thinking that I should maybe reevaluate how I spend my time in prayer and Bible reading. How do I expect to reach God if I’m constantly multitasking during those times? Focused prayer and study are necessary. While I might still pray while doing dishes, I will also make sure I spend some quiet time in prayer.

Do you have something in your life that may be “clogging” your flow with God? It might be time to slow down and focus on what is most important. Time with him is always well spent.
