Homeschooling has been around for many generations. The recent resurgence causes concern for some but excitement for those of us who “pioneered” in the home education revolution of the 1980s. Our family homeschooled for ten years, from grade school through high school. While it might seem scary to some, the success of homeschooling can’t be denied.
Supporting and advocating for homeschooling does NOT mean I plan to attack public or private education. I have had a deep respect for educators since I was a teacher in public schools a short time. Public education has great advantages in some areas, but it falls short for lots of families and children. Not because educators don’t want to meet the needs but because they are limited in how and when they can do it.
Our years of homeschooling were filled with activity, challenges, different types of curriculum, and a variety of ideas of how it should be accomplished! My husband and I didn’t always agree, but we managed to make it through. Both our daughters have homeschooled their children for part of their education. Although their styles differ from mine, it’s thrilling to see them working with their children. That’s what makes home education so exciting and unique. There are different ways to reach the main goal.
Educating children at home has a rich tradition in our country. From the time colonist arrived till now, homeschooling has held a place in our society. Since the pandemic, the surge of homeschool families has amazed some folks. Still, it’s not surprising since parents have discovered they can have a wonderful impact at home. If you’re a newbie homeschooler, good for you! Welcome to the club. If you’re still on the fence, I urge you to do some research. There are a plethora of helpful things out there for you. When we began, the resources were limited, but now there are so many choices it’s mind-boggling.
